Folding Truck Topper | ARE Truck Caps
Our folding truck topper gives you the best of both worlds: full weather protection when you need it and instant open-bed access when you don’t. The multi-panel hinged design folds completely flat against the cab in seconds, no tools or removal required. Heavy-duty aluminum frame construction supports up to 400 pounds distributed load, while integrated weather sealing keeps rain, snow, and road dust out of your cargo area.
We built this system for drivers who refuse to choose between security and versatility. Lockable rear door and side panels protect tools and gear overnight. When it’s time to haul lumber, kayaks, or tall cargo, release the latches and fold the entire assembly forward—your full bed length is instantly available. Mounting clamps install on most factory bed rails without drilling.
- Three-panel hinged design folds flat in under 20 seconds
- Aircraft-grade aluminum frame with powder-coat finish resists corrosion
- Triple weather seals on all panels—tested to 65 mph highway speeds
- 400 lb distributed load capacity supports rooftop cargo carriers
- Keyed locking system secures rear door and both side panels
Panel Construction & Folding Mechanism

Each of the three panels uses a 1.5-inch square aluminum tube perimeter frame welded at every corner for maximum rigidity. We sandwich a closed-cell foam core between dual-layer composite skins—this construction method delivers structural strength without adding unnecessary weight. The finished assembly weighs 78 pounds, light enough for one person to fold and unfold but heavy enough to stay planted at highway speeds.
The hinge system rides on stainless steel pivot pins with sealed needle bearings at six connection points. We opted for this aircraft-style hardware because it eliminates the play and wobble you’ll find in cheaper piano-hinge designs. Gas struts assist the folding motion—no wrestling panels or propping them open while you grab gear. When fully extended, the rear panel locks into place with a positive detent; you’ll feel and hear the click.
Weather Sealing & Water Management

Triple EPDM rubber seals run the full perimeter of every panel joint. The primary seal compresses against the bed rail when you close the topper; a secondary bulb seal fills the gap between adjacent panels; and a third wiper seal channels any water that penetrates the first two barriers into drain channels molded into the frame. We’ve tested this system in a commercial car wash with high-pressure side blasters—zero water intrusion into the bed.
Rear door sealing uses a different approach: a compression latch pulls the door tight against a continuous gasket, creating what we call a ‘positive seal’ rather than relying on weight alone. You’ll notice the difference the first time you drive through a rainstorm. Drain ports at all four corners of the bed rail mounting track evacuate any moisture that condenses inside the frame cavities during temperature swings.
Installation & Bed Compatibility

Mounting System
Our universal clamp brackets attach to factory bed rail stake pockets on 2015 and newer Ford, Chevy, RAM, and Toyota full-size trucks. Each bracket uses a captured T-bolt that slides into the stake pocket channel—no drilling, no permanent modifications to your bed. Tighten the set screws with the included 5mm hex key and you’re done. Total installation time runs about 45 minutes for someone working alone.
Cab Clearance
When folded, the stacked panels rest 14 inches behind the cab glass, leaving full access to sliding rear windows. We designed this clearance specifically so the folded assembly doesn’t block your view through the rear window or interfere with hard-shell truck topper cab mounts on models that share the same bed platform. Short-bed trucks (5.5 to 6.5 feet) get the tightest fit; long-bed configurations (8 feet) leave a small gap between the folded panels and the tailgate when fully open.

Common Questions About Folding Toppers
Yes, as long as your cargo doesn’t extend above the bed rail height. The panels fold forward independently, so you can open just the rear section to access tailgate cargo while leaving the front panels closed over items near the cab. For full folding, make sure nothing is stacked higher than the bed rails or it will block the panels from laying flat.
Our mounting system is compatible with both spray-in and drop-in bed liners. The clamp brackets attach to the bed rail stake pockets, which sit above the liner surface. If you have an over-rail bed liner that covers the stake pockets, you’ll need to trim small access slots in the liner for the mounting bolts. Most professional liner installers can do this during installation if you tell them you’re adding a topper.
The folded stack measures 14 inches from the back of the cab to the leading edge of the panels. This leaves you with full bed length minus that 14-inch section. On a 6.5-foot bed, you’ll have about 5 feet 8 inches of usable length for tall cargo when fully folded. The panels stack about 9 inches high above the bed rails when folded and secured.
Yes, though it’s easier with a second person to help align the topper during initial placement. The entire unit weighs 78 pounds, manageable for one adult to lift onto the bed rails. Once it’s sitting on the rails, all the bracket tightening and adjustment can be done solo. Plan for about 45 minutes if you’re working alone, 30 minutes with help.
Yes. Spray-in liners don’t cover the bed rail stake pockets where our brackets mount, so installation is identical to a bare bed. The only difference is that the rubber seals will compress against the textured liner surface instead of smooth paint. We’ve tested this setup extensively and the weather sealing performs the same on both surfaces.
We cover the hinge assemblies, gas struts, and all structural welds for three years from purchase date. The powder-coat finish and weather seals carry a one-year warranty. If a gas strut fails or a hinge develops play during the warranty period, we’ll ship replacement parts at no charge. Normal wear items like latch springs and seal compression are not covered after the first year.
Yes, when the topper is fully closed and latched. We recommend touchless car washes rather than brush-style washes to avoid unnecessary wear on the finish. Make sure all three panel latches and the rear door are locked before entering the wash. The weather seals are designed to handle commercial car wash pressure without leaking.
